The external stones are a striking sandstone rock formation in the Teutoburg Forest and, as such a prominent natural landmark in Germany. Located within North Rhine-Westphalia in the Lippe district they belong to Horn-Bad Meinberg, and are surrounded by a park-like facility.
The cave itself consists of three rooms which are located along the northeast side, connected to each other. To the southeast of the rock is the narrow entrance to the dome-like primordial cave. Near the entrance stands an indistinct figure worked out from the rock with a key, which is often understood as Peter.
Since the oldest known written mention of today Extersteine by Hermann Hamelmann in 1564 most of the rocks were seen as a Germanic sanctuary that was destroyed by Charlemagne. This interpretation experienced in the second half of the 19th Century with the widespread emergence of interest in pre-and early history of a first peak, only to rejoice in the 1920s to 1945, again great popularity. Since then be taken up mainly in the local history research, these approaches again and again, with many interpretations of the observatory, to place of worship. In the esoteric literature there are some fantastic interpretations. However, excavations revealed no clear evidence of ritual use in prehistoric or early historic period, but evidence of human activity until the early Middle Ages.
