It was described in 1794 by the Spanish botanists Jose Antonio Pavon Jimenez (1754 - 1840) and Hiplito Ruiz Lopez (1754 - 1815). Ruiz & Pavon , as they became known, participated in the first great botanical expedition to the New World during the reign of Charles III of Spain . For 11 years, from 1777 to 1788, they described hundreds of plants from Peruvian and Chilean floras.
And the name of this genre is a tribute of Ruiz & Pavon to Don Francisco de Angulo , collector and collector of orchids that lived in Peru in the late eighteenth century.
They are all terrestrial plants originating in the highlands of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador , Peru and northern Bolivia .
Due to the shape of its flowers, the beautiful plants of this genus receive many popular nicknames: " baby orchid in the cradle ", " orchid crib of Venus ", " Tulip orchid ", " orchid boat ", among others.
