It's some kind of maple tree, but I'm not positive about what kind, because I took this photo a couple of years ago. Sometime I'll have to go back and check.
I was amazed at how tall and skinny some of these trees were! I photographed this at a nature preserve in my area.

Yes, the red tree really stands out! Could it be a prairie sumac called a rhus (lanceolata) tree? Also known as prairie flameleaf sumac or flameleaf sumac, up to 20 feet high.
