The Coleus plant has very colorful foliage and is popular as a houseplant and in gardens. Its geographic origin is Southeast Asia and Malaysia. Circa 1700 the coleus genus was imported to the sierra mazateca where it served as a stand in for Salvia divinorum in shamanistic rituals despite the lack of comparable psychoactivity.
