In regards to the previous poster, an extended exposure time with multiple light sources as you suggusted would only lead to a picture whited out from overexposure

how so? take a camera point it towards a cloud with lightning strikes and leave the shutter open for x amount of time (x in terms minutes) and presto multiple lightning strikes
