More than 2800 American soldiers are buried in the historical cemetery of Tunis, from which 240 were never identified. During the second world war, these young soldiers guided by the general George Patton contributed to put an end to the Italian-German occupation in North Africa. The unloading of the troops allied in this area, started in November 1942 in Morocco, was completed by the countryside of Tunisia the following year. In February 1943, the British, French and American forces brought together approximately 250.000 men against the troops of the Axis twice fewer, driving back them little by little towards the coasts of the country. The offensive was completed by the catch of Tunis on May 7, and the rendering of the German troops ordered by Von Arnim on May 12. It put an end to an occupation which lasted since November 1942. The unloading in North Africa preceded that which was to be held one year later on the coasts of Normandy.
