Lagoon on the island of Jerba, Governorship of Médenine, Tunisia (33°42' NR - 10°59' E). The low one and Jerba punt (the culminating point is to 50 m above the sea level) is not other than old Méninx Roman phenician then, and especially mythical the " island of Lotophages " that Ulysses left only unwillingly. In spite of frequent foreign incursions, the population with Berber and Moslem majority hétérodoxe (kharidjites), which counts also one of the oldest Jewish communities of Maghrebian Africa, knew to maintain a particularism and a balance threatened today. High place of Tunisian tourism (most important of the Maghreb), having of an international airport and a road dam which connects it to the continent, Jerba became a leisure factory while its traditional activities (fishing, irrigated culture) stagnate. Djerbiens, which recovers only one weak share of the tourist expenditure, tend to emigrate in the great urban centres of the country where they hold of the trade. In addition, this exceptional site starts to be affected by the oil pollution which extends in the gulf from Gabès and between Bizerte and the gulf from Tunis. Exodus and pollution are sometimes the ransom of unslung tourism.
