yes it's real
it,s caused by the interation of solar radiation with the atmosphere due to the magnetic feild of the earth turning in towards the center of the earth
the lights are stronger up north than down south

amoekiemoekiemomo - > something to do with the radiation the sun sets off and theres special properties in the nothern atmosphere. I forgot exactly how it works.
