On January 6th, I had the good fortune to see Sun dogs with my camera handy.
This is a photo that I got after my husband and I exited the freeway; he stopped so that I could get some good pictures. This is the sundog that was to the left of the sun. I love the way that the sundog seems to be zooming by the pine tree. The tree appears to be giving the sundog it’s full attention!
ABOUT SUN DOGS Sun dogs are 2 bright spots that sometimes appear on either side of the sun when it is near the horizon. They are caused by thin layers of high ice crystal clouds, called cirrus clouds. They can appear at any time of the year, but are more commonly seen on cold Winter days. Sometimes they resemble two small 2 bright suns, and at other times they may each look like a bit of rainbow.
Sun dogs got their common name because they follow the sun like a dog follows it's master. They are also called mock suns, phantom suns, parlions, or solar parhelia.

I know that cirrus clouds don't cause sun halos, and you can not have sun dogs without the sun halos. Cirrus means curl in Lat. If this was true, halos would be all over the sky, each having its own sun dogs.
